Biographies:

Biography of Joseph Rutter Draper

Joseph Rutter Draper, surgeon, was born in Waylaud, Mass., June 30, 1830; son of Ira and Eunice (Rutter) Draper, who were descendants through different branches from John Rutter, who came to America in the ship Confidence in 1638. He was graduated at Williams college in 1851 and engaged in teaching for several years. He then took a medical course at Harvard and Pittsfield and was graduated from Berkshire medical college in 1862. He joined the Federal army in 1862 as acting assistant surgeon, was commissioned assistant surgeon, and was assigned to the 14th R.I. heavy artillery, serving with the regiment in Texas and Louisiana. He was mustered out of the volunteer service in October, 1865, and engaged in the practice of medicine in Boston, Mass. He was married in November, 1856, to Mary Jane, daughter of Calvin and Abigail (Rutter) Fuller of Dedham, Mass. Their son, Joseph Rutter, born May 22, 1862, was graduated from Williams in the class of 1885 and in medicine from Harvard in 1888. Dr. Draper died in South Boston, Mass., Aug. 5, 1886.

Franklin Fiske Heard Biographical Sketch

Franklin Fiske Heard, editor, was born in Wayland, Mass., Jan. 17, 1825. He was graduated at Harvard in 1848, and was admitted to the Middlesex bar in 1850. In 1855 be removed to Boston and was an editor of the Monthly Law Reporter, 1861-66. He was a painstaking editor of reference books for lawyers and published between 1856 and 1887 over twenty works that became standard. He also contributed to general literature an edition of Boem's Essays (1867); Curiosities of the Law Reporters (1871): Oddities of the Law (1881); and Shakespeare as a Lawyer (1883). He died in Boston, Mass., Sept. 29, 1889.
