Henry Bendjab Russell Biographical Sketch

Henry Bendjab Russell, journalist and author, was born at Russell, Mass., March 9, 1859; son of Edwin Armstrong and Sarah Louise (Tinker) Russell; grandson of Abel and Emeline (Loomis), and of David Parks and glory Elizabeth (Hamilton) Tinker; great4?grandson of William Russell, who came from England to New Haven, Conn., before 1700; and a descendant of Joseph Loomis, Windsor, Conn., 1639; Thomas Tinker, Mayflower passenger, 1620, and John Hamilton, Sudbury, Mass., an original settler of Bradford. He was graduated from the Connecticut Literary institute, Suffield, Conn., 1877; from Amherst, 1881; was a reporter on the Springfield, Mass., Republican, 1881?82, and editor of the Meriden, Conn., Press-Recorder, 1882?84. He was married, Sept. 25, 1885, to Louisa Annette, daughter of Silas W. Clark of Suffield, Conn. He was a special writer on the New York Sun, 1884?88; editorial writer on the Providence Journal, 1888?90, and associate editor of the Hartford Post, 1890?97, He is the author of: Life of William McKinley (1896); International Monetary Conferences (1898); Illustrated History of Out War with Spain (1899), and of contributions to various periodicals.

A Short Biography of Reuben Atwater Chapman

Reuben Atwater Chapman, jurist, was born at Russell, Hampden county, Mass., Sept. 20, 1801. He received the education of a farmer's son, and was clerking in a store when he began the study of law with a neighboring lawyer. He was admitted to the bar, and practised his profession at Westfield, Monson, Ware, and Springfield, Mass., where from 1840 to 1860 he was a partner with the Hon. George Ashmun. He was made associate justice of the supreme court in 1800, and chief justice in 1868. The honorary degree of A.M. was conferred upon him by Williams in 1836 and by Amherst in 1841, and that of LL. D. by Amherst college in 1861, and by Harvard college in 1864. He died in Switzerland, June 28, 1873.
