Biographies:

A Short Biography of Howard Osgood

Howard Osgood, educator, was born at Magnolia plantation, Plaquemine, La., Jan. 4, 1831; son of Isaac and Jane Rebecca (Hall) Osgood; grandson of Timothy and Sarah (Farnham) Osgood, and a descendant of John Osgood, Andover, Mass., 1642. He was a student at Harvard college, 1846-49. He was married in 1853 to Caroline Townsend Lawrence, who died in 1898. He was ordained to the Baptist ministry in 1856; was pastor at Flushing, N.Y., 1856-58; traveled and studied in Europe, 1858-59; was pastor in New York city, 1860-65, and professor of Hebrew in Crozier Theological seminary, Chester, Pa., 1868-73, and in Rochester Theological seminary, 1875-1900. The degree of A.B. was conferred on him by Harvard in 1858, of D.D., by Brown in 1868, and of LL.D. by the College of New Jersey, Princeton, in 1894. He served on the American committee on Bible revision, prepared the introduction for the Schaff-Lange Commentary, and is the author of numerous articles published in the Baptist Review, Biblotheca Sacra and Presbyterian and Reformed Review.
