Biographies:

Philip Hicky Morgan - A Biography

Philip Hicky Morgan, diplomatist, was born in Baton Rouge, La., Nov. 9, 1825; son of the Hon. Thomas Gibber and Eliza Anne (McKennan) Morgan; grandson of Gen. John Morgan; great-grandson of Col. George Morgan of the Revolutionary army, and a descendant of David Morgan of Philadelphia, Pa. He was admitted to the bar in New Orleans, La., in 1847; served as a volunteer lieutenant in the Mexican war, and practised in New Orleans, 1847-54. He was married, May 22, 1852, to Beatrice Leslie, daughter of James and Charlotte (Sutherland) Ford of Baton Rouge. He was judge of the New Orleans district court, 1855-61, and practised law in New Orleans, 1861-51. He was U.S. district attorney for the eastern district of Louisiana, 1865-72; justice of the Louisiana supreme court, 1873-77; represented the United States on the international court of appeal in Egypt, constituted Jan. 30, 1876, 1877-80, declining re-appointment, and was U.S. minister to Mexico by appointment from President Hayes from Jan. 26, 1880, to March 23, 1885. He then practised law in New York city until his death, Aug. 18, 1900.
