Contact Us! 15% - 35% off all Products ยป The Ready Store Biographies:A Biography of Charles Courtney Curran Charles Courtney Curran, painter, was born in Hartford, Ky., Feb. 13, 1861; son of Ulysses T. and Elizabeth (Thompson) Curran; and grandson of James Curran. He received a common school education and studied art in the Cincinnati (Ohio) school of design, the National academy of design, the New York art students' league, and Julian academy, Paris, France, studying in the latter city under Doucet, Lefebvre, and Benjamin Constant. He was chosen a member of the Society of American artists in 1888, of the New York water color club, and of the American water color society. In 1895 he was elected an associate of the National academy of design. He was married June 12, 1889, to Grace W., daughter of Charles Preston and Emily Jane (Wildman) Wickham of Norwalk, Ohio. Among his paintings are Breezy Days, which was awarded the 3d Halgartan prize at the National academy of design in 1888; The Sirens, which won the Clarke prize in 1893; and The Enchanted Shore, second Halgarten prize, 1895, at the National academy of design. He received a silver medal for art work at the Cotton States exposition at Atlanta, Ga., in 1892, and a medal at the World's Columbian exposition at Chicago, Ill., in 1893. In 1899 he exhibited at the Boston art club Among the Hollyhocks and Catching Minnows. |

Additional Local History Notes: The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows: HARTFORD, a post-village, capital of Ohio co., Kentucky, on Rough creek, an affluent of Green river, 160 miles S. W. from Frankfort. It contains a court house and two churches. It was settled in 1808. Population, about 500. Hartford is situated 127 meters above sea level. |
