Contact Us! 15% - 35% off all Products ยป The Ready Store Biographies:Chilton Allan Biographical Sketch Chilton Allan, representative, was born in Albemarle county, Va., April 6, 1786; son of Archibald Allan. He settled in Winchester, Clark county, Ky., as a wheelwright, and educated himself for the legal profession. He represented his district in the state legislature for several terms between 1811 and 1831 and was state senator in 1823. He represented his congressional district in the 22d, 23d and 24th congresses. 1831-'37, where he was chairman of the committee on territories and a member of the committee on foreign affairs. In 1838 he was a member of the board of internal improvements in Kentucky and chairman of the board, and in 1843 was again a representative in the state legislature. He died in Winchester, Ky., Sept. 3, 1858. William J. Barbee Biography William J. Barbee, author, was born at Winchester, Ky., in 1816. His education was obtained at Paris, Ky., and at the Miami university, in Oxford, Ohio. After his graduation he began the study of medicine, and for nearly ten years practised that profession in Cincinnati, but he subsequently became a school teacher and a Campbellite preacher. Among his published writings are: "The Scriptural Doctrine of Confirmation"; "The Physical and Moral Aspect of Geology" (1859); "The Cotton Question; its Production and Consumption" (1866); "The First Principles of Geology" (1867); "Life of the Apostle Peter." He died at Winchester, Ky., Oct. 27, 1892. A Short Biography of Joseph Ficklin Joseph Ficklin, mathematician, was born at Winchester, Ky., Sept. 9, 1833. He was graduated at the Masonic college, Lexington, Mo., in 1838. He was principal of the high school of Trenton, Mo., 1854-59; professor of mathematics in the Female college, Bloomington, Ill., 1859-60; professor of mathematics in the Christian female college, Columbia, Mo., 1864-65; and professor of mathematics, astronomy and mechanical philosophy in the University of Missouri, 1865-79; after that holding the chair of mathematics and astronomy until his death. The University of Wisconsin conferred upon him the degree of Ph.D. in 1874 and that of LL.D. in 1884. He published: The Complete Algebra and Key and Algebra Problems and Key (1874); First Lessons in Arithmetic; Elementary Arithmetic; Table-Book and Primary Arithmetic; Practical Arithmetic; National Arithmetic, with a Key, and Elements of Algebra (1881). He died in Columbia, Mo., Sept. 6, 1887. |
