Biographies:

William Orlando Butler Biographical Sketch

William Orlando Butler, soldier, was born in Jessamine county, Ky., in 1791, son of Gen. Percival Butler. He was graduated at Transylvania university in 1812, studied law under Robert Wickliffe and became ensign in the 17th U. S. infantry. He was taken prisoner at Raisin River Jan. 22, 1813, and subsequently joined General Jackson at New Orleans with a volunteer company, where he was brevetted major 1815, becoming aide to Jackson in 1816. He engaged in the practice of law at Carrollton, Ky., in 1817; was a representative in the state legislature 1818-20, and in Congress 1839-43. He became major general of volunteers June 29, 1846, and being senior major general succeeded General Scott in the command of the army of occupation in Mexico. Both congress and the State of Kentucky presented him with a sword. He was nominated as vice president of the United States on the ticket with Lewis Cass, Democrat, in 1848. He died at Carrollton, Ky., Aug, 6, 1880.

The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows:

CARROLLTON, (formerly PORT WILLIAM,) a post-town, capital of Carroll county, Kentucky, on the Ohio river, just above the month of the Kentucky river, and about 45 miles N. N. W. from Frankfort. It has considerable business, and contains a fine courthouse, 3 or 4 churches, 1 academy, 2 or 3 mills, 2 piano factories, and a rope walk. 2 newspapers are issued here. Pop. estimated at 1000.






Carrollton is situated 147 meters above sea level.
