Civil War Action near Atchison KS

Atchison, Kas., Jan. 24, 1862. Detachment of the 1st Missouri Cavalry. On this Date Capt. Fuller of the 1st Mo. cavalry, stationed at Atchison, was notified by one Irving of Missouri that Chandler's jayhawkers had robbed his farm, taking horses, mules and negroes, dragged several women and other members of his family from bed brutally insulted them, robbed them of their jewelry and had then Gone Toward Elwood. Irving and some of his neighbors were sent after the jayhawkers as guides and Fuller and a detachment of soldiers followed. Upon overtaking Irving's Party Fuller Found that they had engaged the jayhawkers, captured 2 of their Number and killed their leader. Some of the marauders were captured in the direction of Elwood, others in the direction of White Cloud and Irving's property was recovered.
