Biographies:

Biography of William Vaughn Moody

William Vaughn Moody, author and teacher, was born in Spencer, Ind., July 8, 1869; son of Francis Burdette and Henrietta Emily (Stoy) Moody. His father was engaged in the river steamboat transportation between Pittsburg and New Orleans, as was his grandfather, who was also a builder of steamboats. His great-grandfather, a pioneer settler of Indiana, built the first brick house in the state. William attended the public schools of New Albany, Ind., and in 1886, on the death of his parents he taught school in southern Ohio, meanwhile continuing his own studies. He later taught in New York state, and in 1889 entered Harvard, where he was graduated, class poet, in 1893. He took a post-graduate course, 1893-94; received the degree of A.M., 1894; was assistant instructor in English at Harvard and Radcliffe colleges, 1894-95, and was appointed instructor in English at the University of Chicago in 1895. He traveled extensively in Europe, and studied chiefly in England and Italy. He edited Complete Poetical Works of Milton, with a new translation of the Latin Poems (1899), and various other English classics. He is the author of: The Masque of Judgment, a Lyrical Drama (1900); Poems (1902); and contributions to magazines.

The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows:

SPENCER, a post-village, capital of Owen county, Indiana, on the W. fork of the White river, 54 miles S. W. from Indianapolis. Grain and other articles are shipped from this place by the river. Spencer contains a court house, 2 or 3 churches, and several warehouses.
