Additional Local History Notes: The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows: MIAMI, a county in the N. central part of Indiana, contains 384 square miles. It is intersected by the Wabash and Eel rivers. The surface is hilly near the rivers, and almost level in other parts. The soil is fertile. Wheat, corn, oats, pork, and beef are the principal articles of export. In 1850 this county produced 548,338 bushels of corn; 114,454 of wheat; 29,569 of oats, and 3701 tons of hay. It contained 12 churches, 1 newspaper office; 2500 pupils attending public schools, and 170 attending other schools. The Wabash and Erie canal passes through the county, and a railroad is in course of construction from Indianapolis to Peru. Capital, Peru. Population, 11,304. |
