Biographies:

Joel Prescott Heatwole - A Biography

Joel Prescott Heatwole, representative, was born in Waterford, Ind., Aug. 22, 1856; son of Henry and Barbara (Culp) Heatwole: grandson of David Heatwole; and great grandson of Mathias Heatwole, who came to America from Germany in 1748, a descendant of the Rev. George Heatwole, who died at Marschbach, Germany, in 1608. Joel was educated in the public schools; taught school and learned the printer's trade; and removed to Minnesota in 1882. He was secretary of the Republican state central committee four years, and its chairman two years; and a member of the board of regents of the University of Minnesota six years. He was unanimously elected as delegate-at-large to the Republican national convention in 1888; was president of the Minnesota editorial association three terms; and was mayor of the city of Northfield. He was a Republican representative in the 54th, 55th, 56th and 57th congresses, 1895-1903, serving in all as a member of the committee on foreign affairs; in the 55th and 56th as a member of the select committee on the twelfth census; in the 55th as chairman of the committee on ventilation and acoustics; and in the 56th congress as a member of the joint committee on the Washington centennial celebration, and chairman of the committee on printing. He was selected as one of the managers on the part of the house of representatives having in charge the war resolutions in April, 1898. He was married Dec. 4, 1890, to Mrs. Gertrude L. Archibald of Northfield, Minn.
