Biographies:

William McKee Dunn - A Biography

William McKee Dunn, representative, was born in Hanover, Ind., Dec. 12, 1814; son of Williamson Dunn, pioneer settler of Indiana, and a founder of Hanover and Wabash colleges. He was graduated at Indiana state university in 1832, was professor of mathematics at Hanover, 1835, and took a post-graduate course at Yale, receiving from that institution the honorary degree of A.M. in 1835. He practised law in Madison, Ind., was a representative in the state legislature in 1838, a delegate to the state constitutional convention of 1850, and a representative in the 36th and 37th congresses, 1859-63. In the 37th congress be was chairman of the committee on patents. He was defeated in the election for the 38th congress and was appointed by President Lincoln to the U.S. volunteer service as major and judge-advocate in the department of Missouri. He was promoted colonel and judge-advocate-general, U.S.A., June 22, 1864, and received the brevet of brigadier-general, U.S. army, in March, 1865, for faithful, meritorious and distinguished services in his department. He was a delegate to the Loyalist convention of 1866 at Philadelphia. He succeeded Judge Joseph Holt as judge-advocate-general on his retirement from the bureau of military justice, Dec. 1, 1875, and he was retired from active service, Jan. 22, 1881. He received the degree of LL.D. from Hanover college (Ind.) in 1877. Judge Dunn died in Maplewood, Fairfax county, Va., July 28, 1887.
