Biographies:

Biographical Sketch of Lewis Alden Estes

Lewis Alden Estes, educator, was born at Durham, Maine, Dec. 11, 1815; son of Thomas and Bettie (Alden) Estes, and a descendant of John and Priscilla Alden. He was prepared for college at Maine Wesleyan seminary and was graduated at Bowdoin in 1844. In 1846 he became principal of a school under the control of the Society of Friends in Richmond, Ind., afterward known as Earlham college, and remained in that position until 1863. He then taught school at Westfield, Ind., until 1870, when he was elected president of Wilmington college, Ohio. He resigned in 1876 to engage in other business. He was married first, Feb. 24, 1848, to Huldah Case, daughter of the Rev. Nathan C. Hoag, who died Aug, 6, 1875; and second, to Esther Owen Brown. He died at Westfield, Ind., Nov. 10, 1891.
