His father settled in Indiana in 1819, making his home in Franklin county. David was admitted to the bar in 1830, and settled in practice in Yorktown, Delaware county. He was a representative in the state legislature, 1833-38; president judge of his judicial circuit. 1869-44; delegate to the state constitutional convention of 1850; representative in the state legislature and speaker of the house, 1855; representative in the 85th and 36th congresses, 1857-61; and a delegate to the National Union convention at Philadelphia in 1866. He was familiafly known as the "Delaware chief." He died at Yorktown, Ind., in 1900. |
