Biographies:Simon Nelson Patten - A Biography Simon Nelson Patten, political economist, was born at Sandwich, Ill., May 1, 1852; son of William and Elizabeth (Pratt) Patten; grandson of James and Mary (Robertson) Patten and of Simon and Deborah (Nelson) Pratt, and a descendant of William Pratt of Saybrook, Conn. (1632), and of William Patten, New York, 1794. He was prepared for college at Jennings seminary, Aurora, Ill.; attended Northwestern university, Evanston, Ill., 1874-76; and was graduated at the University of Halle, Germany, A.M. and Ph.D., 1878. He was principal of public schools in Illinois and Iowa, 1882-88, and in 1883 became professor of political economy in the Wharton School of Finance and Economy, University of Pennsylvania. He contributed to the Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, the Political Science Quarterly, the Journal of Economics, Conrad's Jahrbucher, and other periodicals, and is the author of: The Stability of Prices (1888); The Consumption of Wealth (1889); The Economic Basis of Protection (1890); Principles of Rational Taxation (1890); Tide Theory of Dynamic Economics (1892); Theory of Social Forces (1896); The Development of English Thought (1899). |
