A Short Biography of James Herron Eckels

James Herron Eckels, comptroller of the currency, U.S., 1893-97, was born in Princeton. Ill., Nov. 25, 1859. He was graduated at the Albany (N.Y) Law School, 1880, and practised law in Illinois until 1893, when he was appointed comptroller of the currency. He held the office until 1897, when he became president of the Commercial National Bank, Chicago, Ill.

The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows:

PRINCETON, a post-village, capital of Bureau county, Illinois, on the Military Tract railroad, 65 miles N. from Peoria. It is situated on a fertile prairie, 1 or 2 miles E. from Bureau cr. Two newspapers are issued here.






Princeton is situated 219 meters above sea level.
