He was prepared for college in the district and high schools of Iowa, and was graduated from Battle Creek (Mich.) college in 1882. From 1882 to 1885 he was teacher in various high schools in Michigan, and from 1888 to 1894 was principal of the South Lancaster (Mass.) academy. In the latter year be was elected president of Battle Creek college. |

Additional Local History Notes: The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows: FAIRFIELD, a flourishing post-village, capital of Jefferson county, Iowa, on Big Cedar creek, about 50 miles W. by N. from Burlington. A plank-road has been commenced between this point and Burlington; and a railroad has been projected which will connect it with Keokuk. Fairfield is one of the most important towns in the interior of the state and is the centre of an active trade. It has 2 newspaper offices, a United States land-office, a female seminary, and a college established by the state. Population in 1853 estimated at 1500. Fairfield is situated 236 meters above sea level. |
