Additional Local History Notes: The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows: CLINTON, a county in the E. part of Iowa, bordering on Illinois, has an area of 696 square miles. The Mississippi river forms its eastern boundary; the Wapsipinicon traverses the western part and forms the southern boundary of the county. The county has a fair proportion of timber and prairie; the soil is good. Indian corn, wheat, hay, and butter are the staples. In 1850 this county produced 94,100 bushels of Indian corn; 61,945 of wheat; 30,759 of oats; 11,163 of potatoes; 65,038 pounds of butter, and 5144 tons of hay. Capital, De Witt. Population, 2822. |
