A Biography of Charles Colcock Jones

Charles Colcock Jones, clergyman, was born at Liberty Hall, Ga., Dec. 20, 1804; son of Maj. John (1749-1779) and Susannah Hyrne (Girardeau) Jones; grandson of Maj. John Jones (1720-1779), the son of an English colonist, who settled in Charleston, S.C., was a rice planter, removed to Georgia in 1770, planted rice in St. John's parish, and fell at the siege of Savannah, 1779. Charles Colcock Jones was graduated from Princeton Theological seminary in 1829 and from Andover Theological seminary in 1830. He married Mary Anderson. He was ordained by the presbytery of Georgia, Nov. 27, 1830, and was pastor at Savannah, Ga., 1831-32; a missionary in Liberty county, Ga., 1832-35; professor of ecclesiastical history at the theological seminary at Columbia, S.C., 1835-38; returned to missionary work in Riceborough, Ga., and vicinity, 1839-47; and was again professor of ecclesiastical history at Columbia Theological seminary, 1847-50. He was secretary of the board of missions at Philadelphia, 1850-57, when failing health necessitated his return to Georgia, where he was stated supply at Pleasant Grove, 1856-63. The honorary degree of D.D. was conferred upon him by Jefferson college, Pa., in 1846. He is the author of acatechism for the instruction of negroes. He died at Pleasant Grove, Ga., March 16, 1803.
