Biographies:

David B. Culberson Biography

David B. Culberson, representative, was born in Troup county, Ga., Sept. 29, 1830. He was educated at Brownwood university, La Grange, Ga., and studied law under Chief Justice Chilton of Alabama. In 1856 he removed to Texas where he was admitted to the bar. He was elected a representative in the Texas legislature in 1859. At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted as a private in the 18th Texas infantry and was promoted to the rank of colonel. He was assigned to duty as adjutant-general of the state of Texas in 1864 and the same year was again elected to the legislature. He was a representative from the 4th district in the 44th-54th congresses, 1875-95. He served as chairman of the judiciary committee in the 52d congress and subsequently as a member of that committee. He declined a seat on the Interstate commerce commission in 1891. His son, Charles A., was governor of Texas, 1897-98, and was elected U.S. senator, Jan. 24, 1899, as successor to Roger Q. Mills. David B. Culberson died in Jefferson, Texas, May 7, 1900.
