Biographies:

Biographical Sketch of Thomas Goodwin Lawson

Thomas Goodwin Lawson, representative, was born in Putnam county, Ga., May 2, 1835; son of Reese and Elizabeth (Keaton) Lawson; grandson of David and Mary (Reese) Lawson, and a descendant of William Lawson, a Revolutionary soldier, whose ancestors came from England to Virginia in the seventeenth century. He was graduated from Mercer university. A.B., 1855, A.M., 1858. He was a representative in the state legislature, 1861-67; a member of the state constitutional convention of 1877; judge of the superior court of Ocmulgee circuit, 1879-87, and engaged in farming, 1888-91. He was a Democratic representative from the eighth district of Georgia in the 52d, 53d and 54th congresses, 1891-97, and was defeated for nomination to the 54th congress because he advocated the gold standard in opposition to the free coinage of silver.

A Short Biography of John Thomas Clarke

John Thomas Clarke, jurist, was born in Putnam county, Ga., Jan. 12, 1834; son of James and Permelia T. (Wellborn) Clarke. At the age of three years he removed with his parents to Lumpkin, Stewart county, Ga. He was graduated at Mercer university in 1853; was admitted to the bar in 1854. He was ordained a Baptist minister in 1858, but was judge of the superior courts of Pataula circuit in 1863-68. He was a presidential elector in 1868; a state senator in 1878; and in 1882-90 was again on the bench. He was for many years a member of the board of trustees of Mercer university, and president of the board of trustees of Southwest Georgia agricultural and mechanical college. He received the honorary degree of LL. D from Mercer university in 1884. While in the active discharge of his duties as judge of the superior court, he was killed by a railroad accident at Smithville, Ga., July 22, 1889.

A Short Biography of Henry Gazaway Lamar

Henry Gazaway Lamar, representative, was born in Putnam county, Ga. He was a nephew of Zachariah and John Lamar, and a cousin of President M.B. Lamar, Judge L. Q. C. Lamar and Col. John B. Lamar. He became a lawyer in Macon, Ga., and wasa representative from that district in the 21st and 22d congresses, 1829-33, and a judge of the superior court of Georgia. No record of the date of his birth or death or of his parents' names could be found.
