Biographies:

Biographical Sketch of Atticus Greene Haygood

Atticus Greene Haygood, M.E. bishop, was born in Watkinsville, Ga., Nov. 19, 1839. He was graduated from Emory college in 1859, was licensed to preach the same year, and joined the Georgia conference of the M.E. church. He served successively as pastor, presiding elder and army chaplain till 1870; was editor of the Sunday school publications of the M.E. church, south, 1870-76; and was president of Emory college, 1876-84. He also edited the Wesleyan Christian Advocate, 1878-82. He declined an election as bishop in 1882, the same year was made agent of the John F. Slater education fund, and in 1884 he resigned the presidency of Emory to devote his time to the Slater fund. In May, 1890, he was elected and ordained a bishop, and made his residence at Los Angeles, Cal. The degree of D.D. was conferred on him by Emory in 1870, and that of LL.D. by the Southwestern university of Texas in 1884. He is the author of Our Children (1876); Our Brother in Black (1881); Sermons and Speeches (1883); Pleas for Progress (1889); and The Man of Galilee (1889). He died in Oxford, Ga., Jan. 19, 1896.
