Biographies:

William Cannon - A Biography

William Cannon, governor of Delaware, was born in Bridgeville, Del., in 1809. He was a Methodist class-leader and preacher from 1828 until his death. He served in the state legislature from 1845 to 1849, and for a time filled the office of state treasurer. He was a delegate to the peace congress in 1861 and was a stanch advocate of the Crittenden compromise. He was elected governor of Delaware in 1862 and advised that body to emancipate the slaves in the state. He died in Philadelphia, Pa., March 1, 1865.
