Hall, governor of Delaware, was born in Frederica, Del., Jan. 1, 1817; son of John Hall. His father died in 1826, and the son was obliged to earn his own living. He was a clerk in a mercantile establishment in Frederica, and at the same time sold confectionery on his own account. In 1838 he bought out his employer's mercantile business and in a few years he succeeded in establishing an extensive trade. He also engaged in the grain and lumber trade and subsequently in the shipping business. He was state senator in 1866; a delegate to the Democratic national convention in 1876; a candidate for governor of the state in 1874; governor, 1879-83, and was again state senator in 1890. He died at Frederica, Del., Jan. 23, 1893. |
