Samuel lves Curtiss Biographical Sketch

Samuel lves Curtiss, educator, was born in Union, Conn., Feb. 5, 1844. He was graduated at Amherst in 1867 and at Union theological seminary in 1870. He engaged in domestic mission work in connection with the Fifth avenue Presbyterian church, New York city, 1870-72. After spending 1872-73 at Bonn, Germany, and in travel in Ireland and Scotland, he was ordained in 1874 by the New York presbytery. He helped to found, at Leipzig, an American chapel, and was first pastor of the church, 1874-78, meanwhile pursuing his studies at the university, receiving the degrees of Ph.D. in 1876, and Lic. Th. in 1878 from the University of Berlin. In 1878 he was made professor of biblical literature in the Chicago theological seminary and was transferred to the chair of Old Testament literature in 1879. In 1899 he made an extended tour of the east, including Egypt and Arabia He became one of the editors of the Bibliotheca Sacra. He received the degree of D.D. from Java college in 1878 and from Amherst in 1881. He published his doctor's thesis, The Name Machaber (Leipzig, 1876); a translation of Bickell's Outlines of Hebrew Grammar (1877); of Dilitzsch's Messianic Prophesia (1880); Old Testament History of Redemption (1881); The Levitical Priests (1877); his licentiate thesis De Aarouitici sacerdotti atque thoroe Elohisticae origine (Berlin 1878); Ingersoll and Moses (1879); and contributions to Current Discussions in Theology.
