Additional Local History Notes: The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows: MONROE, a county in the E. part of Arkansas, contains 1040 square miles. It is intersected by the White and Cache rivers. The surface is mostly level, and is partly occupied by cypress swamps and plantations of cotton and maize. In 1850 this county produced 70,321 bushels of Indian corn; 587 1/2 bales of cotton, and 15,561 pounds of butter. It contained 2 churches. The navigation of White river is always good through Monroe county. Capital, Lawrenceville. Pop., 2049, of whom 1654 were free, and 395, slaves. |
