Contact Us! 15% - 35% off all Products ยป The Ready Store Local History Notes:The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows: FLORENCE, a flourishing post-village, capital of Lauderdale county, Alabama, is situated at the head of navigation on the Tennessee river, and at the foot of the Muscle Shoals, nearly opposite Tuscumbia, and 250 miles N.W. from Montgomery. It is the principal shipping point for the produce of the county and of parts of Tennessee, and does a large business in proportion to the population. The river, which is here about half a mile wide, is crossed by a fine bridge which cost $150,000. The route of the railroad which has been commenced between Memphis and Charleston passes near this village. A railroad is proposed which will connect Florence with Nashville and New Orleans. Florence contains 3 large brick churches, a female seminary, and a newspaper office. There are 2 large cotton factories on Cypress creek, 3 miles from the village, having a capital of $45,000 each. Shoal creek also gives motion to a cotton factory (9 miles distant) which cost $60,000. The river is navigable by steamboats from its mouth to Florence, a distance of 300 miles. Population in 1853, about 1500. |
